Drama

Drama is embedded within every subject we teach and school should have a certain theatricality. It’s a show, we entertain, we educate, we work together to create the greatest masterpiece of all, a well-rounded, articulate and confident pupil.

Mr Thomas, Headteacher

At St Peter’s we aim to develop every child’s imagination and give them lots of opportunities to express themselves through collaborative dramatic arts. It is through Drama that this expression is encouraged; from story-telling and imaginative play for our youngest pupils through to acting, dancing and singing skills of the older children. We offer a wide range of opportunities to cater for those with a passion for performance but we also aim to develop every child’s confidence and public speaking skills.

Drama is encouraged throughout the curriculum with many links in literacy, reading and language. But it’s also a visible part of RE, PSHE, Music and Forest School sessions. For those who wish to pursue more opportunities in drama, there are drama and performance clubs at lunch times and after school, led by a member of staff with extensive experience in drama. Our youngest learners steal the spotlight in the annual Nativity and Upper School children perform in an annual performance and a bi-annual musical extravaganza.

All children visit local theatres on trips linked to their topics or reading books and every year the whole school visits a theatre and experiences a live performance. Recent productions pupils have enjoyed include ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘The Wizard of Oz’. Pupils in Upper School also watch a Shakespeare play annually, enjoying the age-appropriate productions performed by the company ‘Shakespeare for Kids’. A highlight for each class, and their parents, are the year group assemblies, where children are given the opportunity to read or perform in front of an audience in a child-centred and friendly way.

As a school, we offer private Speech and Drama lessons through a specialist teacher who guides children through LAMDA exams, with great success. These lessons incur an additional cost.
