Mark Thomas

Headteacher & DSL

Mark has been a dedicated educator since 2003, holding a variety of roles in some of the country’s most prestigious schools. His career began in the drama department at Oakham School, after which he took on a multi-faceted role at Uppingham School in 2006, where he spent seven fulfilling years. With an engineering degree already under his belt, Mark’s passion for education led him to explore primary teaching after his inspiring experiences with Prep School Drama Days. This drive led him to pursue a school-based PGCE at Bourne Abbey Academy, a large and 'Outstanding' 3-form entry school near his home, where he discovered his love for primary education as a Year 6 teacher.

Mark's journey in education continued as he became Head of Maths and a Senior Leader at Copthill Independent School, which was named Prep School of the Year. During his five years there, he honed his leadership skills and developed a deep commitment to nurturing young minds. In 2019, Mark travelled to Nepal, where he rebuilt a primary school in the Himalayas that had been devastated by an earthquake. This life-changing experience fuelled his ambition to pursue headship.

In 2020, Mark joined St Peter's School just weeks before the global pandemic struck. Despite the challenges, he has thrived in his role, helping to cultivate and grow the beautiful and traditional Prep School. In 2023, Mark earned the esteemed National Professional Qualification in Headship and a Level 7 Senior Leadership Award, a testament to his belief in lifelong learning. Beyond his professional achievements, Mark is also a rugby player, coach and referee and a devoted dog owner. His two dogs, Nala and Minnie, are beloved visitors to the school, where they enjoy listening to the children read.
